I saw a post to this effect on LinkedIn.
Everybody’s trying to use AI to transform their business. I’m wondering how to get payroll off an Excel spreadsheet.
Everybody has this problem. You have some old timey, inefficient process you’ve been doing for years. It wastes time, it’s embarrassing, but you keep doing it because the cost of fixing it seems prohibitive.
- You’re too busy to fix it.
- What if I try a new system and it doesn’t work?
- The current system isn’t really that bad, after all.
- The new system will cost too much.
- My employees are used to the current system.
It’s so easy to make excuses for what you’re currently doing. That’s how our brains work.
There are a lot of ways to address this problem, but I’m going to point out the simplest.
Take one step in the direction of making the change. Make it small and simple. It might be …
- List alternative technologies.
- Make a list of requirements for a new system.
- Quantify the actual cost of your current process.
Or, heaven forbid, schedule a meeting to discuss it.
The point is to overcome the momentum of doing nothing. Objects at rest tend to stay at rest. One small step can break that pattern and get you moving.
In a way, it doesn’t make that much difference which way you start moving. Once you’re moving, you can adjust course. You can’t adjust course when you’re doing nothing.
If you have an old technology you want to replace, or a new technology you’d like to consider, contact me. I’d be happy to help you.
